Msgr. Garail, personal representative of Cardinal Saliege, Archbishop of Toulouse, is now visiting Israel to inspect the French section of the Forest of Martyrs. A section of this forest, planted by veterans of the French anti-Nazi underground, is named for Cardinal Saliege in recognition of his defense of French Jews during the Nazi occupation.

Msgr. Garail was welcomed here by officials of the Ministry of Religions and of the Jewish National Fund, who escorted him on a tour of the forest. Msgr. Garail expressed the Cardinal’s thanks for the tribute and his regrets that he was not able personally to visit Israel. The Cardinal is 96 years old.

Thousands of Jews in the Toulouse area, including many children, were saved from the Nazis by the energetic intervention of the aged Cardinal who gave shelter to many in his palace.
