Proceedings against Charles du Patier de Clam, Commissioner for Jewish Affairs in the Vichy Government, have been dropped following a decision of a High Court investigating commission that there was insufficient evidence for prosecution.
The commission, however, ordered that the public prosecutor prepare for the trials of two other Vichy officials. One is Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, also a former Commissioner for Jewish Affairs, who was indicted for treason in Dec., 1945, but who fled the country. The second is Xavier Vallat, one-time Secretary of State in the same ministry, who is also charged with treason as well as with demoralizing the nation with a view toward weakening its defenses. The latter is a capital offense.
