Eugene Weil and Jules Braunschwig, members of the central committee of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, have arrived here to negotiate with the Israeli education authorities for maintenance and extension of a group of schools supported by the Alliance.
The French-Jewish leaders will also present a demand to the Minister of Education that if and when education becomes compulsory in Israel and the government assumes responsibility for all schools, the Alliance schools will be integrated within the school system and subsidies and facilities extended to them on an equal basis. The Alliance is also planning to convert the nine schools it now maintains–with a student enrollment of 5,000–into secondary schools. Negotiations are expected to be completed by the end of this week, and the A.I.U. leaders plan to report the results to the Alliance by the beginning of May.
