Thousands filled the Great Synagogue in the Rue de la Victoire here yesterday at the annual services commemorating the deportation of the Jews from France to the extermination centers during the Nazi regime. The services were retransmitted by the French television system and representatives of the French Government were present.
Grand Rabbi Jacob Kaplan memorialized the martyred Jews in his sermon and warned that many of the Nazi murderers and war criminals were still free and unpunished. In a reference to the Arab onslaught against Israel last June, Rabbi Kaplan fervently declared that “thanks to the God of Israel, this second attempt at genocide” had been defeated.
