A section of the French press in Canada today started a campaign against the efforts of Jewish and non-Jewish groups in the country to have the doors of Canada opened to wider immigration. French newspapers in Quebec province go so far as to attack the recent decision of the Canadian Government to admit refugees who are stranded in Spain and in Portugal.
Government spokesmen today stated that Canadian officials in Lisbon are already examining the applications of refugees who wish to proceed to Canada. These applications, after being examined on the spot, will be transmitted to Ottawa for approval, after which regular immigration visas will be issued.
No restrictions will be made with regard to race, or religion, or profession in issuing the visas, it was emphasized. There is no limit on the number of visas to be issued in Spain and in Portugal. Preference will be given to families.
