French school officials are calling for legislation to ban the wearing of religious insignia in public schools. Presenting evidence to a presidential commission on the secular nature of the French state, union representatives and individual school directors demanded that the status quo — whereby directors of each school may choose whether or not to allow their students to wear religious insignia — creates confusion in the public school system.
