Leading members of the French Cabinet, former Prime Ministers Pierre Mendes-France and Guy Mollet, and outstanding scientists and literary figures of this country, participated in impressive farewell ceremonies here tonight as France bade von voyage to Israel’s Ambassador Yaacov Tsur. Mr. Tsur is relinquishing his post to return home.
“Israel and France must continue to work together,” declared Minister of State Jacques Soustelle, one of the leading figures of the Gaullist government at the rally. M. Mollet told the meeting: “The fact that all these people, who have so often opposed one another in French life, are here, united to say farewell to Israel’s Ambassador, is a sign of the sympathy and understanding for Israel among all elements of our population.”
Among the prominent personalities in attendance were former Ministers Daniel Mayer and Christian Pineau; Prof. Rene Cassin, vice-president of the Council of State; the writer Andre Maurois; and Francais Berrin, former head of the French Atomic Energy Commission.
“Israel is a country that offers particular reasons for attachment and interest for all of us,” declared M. Soustelle. “For some, it is a biblical attraction. To others, the appeal is that of a young state making its way. To still others, Israel, by its very existence, represents a victory over racism and discrimination. No one can help but admire a people who have translated a dream into a reality.”
