Freperick Warburg Heads New York Federation’s Campaign This Year

Organized Jewish charity, through the affiliated agencies of the New York Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, has spent $87,910,556 during the twelve years since the Federation was founded, according to a statement yesterday by Frederick M. Warburg, newly appointed associate chairman of the $5,300,000 campaign to be conducted next month by the organization to meet the 1928 budgetary needs of its ninety-one societies.

Of this sum, Mr. Warburg’s report showed, Federation’s contribution, which represents the amount raised for the general public, has been $42,974,450. This amount includes the budgetary allotment of $4,879,143 for the current year, to secure which it is estimated that $5,300,000 in pledges must be secured.

Statistical data regarding the part which the Jews of New York have played in the philanthropic affairs of the community will be submitted tomorrow night, at the Hotel Plaza. when councillors and division heads of the Business Men’s Council of the Federation will meet Mr. Warburg at dinner to effect a campaign organization for the forthcoming campaign.

The appointment of Frederick M. Warburg, eldest son of Felix M. Warburg, as associate chairman of the 1928 fund-raising appeal for $5,300,000 to be made next month by the Federation was announced by Sol M. Stroock, president of the Federation.

As chairman of the campaign, Mr. Warburg will be the youngest man ever selected by the local Jewish community to head a drive of such magnitude. The elder Mr. Warburg, now the chairman of the Federation board, was the first president of the Federation and one of its founders in 1916. His grandfather, the late Jacob H. Schiff, also was a founder of the Federation.

The new chairman is a member of the board of directors of the Jewish Social Service Association and of the Ninety-second Street Young Men’s Hebrew Association, both of which are among the niety-one constituent agencies maintained by the Federation. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Boy Scout Foundation of Greater New York, the National Playground and Recreation, Better Times, Beekman Street Hospital and the International Migration Service.

Mr. Stroock, in commenting on the appointment of Mr. Warburg, said, “Federation instruc Jewish fashion, renews her youth like the eagle. So we have called again upon an outstaning representative of our young manhood to bear our standards in our money-raising activities during the current year. Stimulated and encouraged by his example in accepting the position of associate chairman of our campaign, we shall follow loyally and steadfastly where he leads. The community must uphold him in his work.”
