Senator Owen Brewster, Republican of Maine, attacked the British Government in a speech in the Senate today for intending, through the Anglo-American commission on Palestine,” to saddle the American Government with the roral responsibility for British policy without any intention of allowing the United States an effective voice in deciding Palestine’s future.”
The Senator declared that the British Government has never asked the use of American forces in Palestine, contrary to reports which he said the British have spread. The British argument of Arab violence, Brewster said, is merely being used as an excuse for not undertaking a policy which the British do not want to execute.
Assignment by the United Nations Organization of the Palestine trusteeship to Britain is the intention of the British, Brewster alleged. Under such an arrangement, be declared, Great Britain would be freer to pursue its own policy in Palestine than when acting as the mandatory of the League of Nations. He paid tribute to the “extraordinary progress accomplished through the consecrated labors of the Zionist organization” in Palestine throughout many years, declaring he could testify to these accomplishments from his visit to Palestine this year.
At the conclusion of his address, Brewster inserted in the Congressional Record a Jewish Telegraphic Agency story reporting the mistreatment of members of the Jewish committee at the British-operated Belsen camp, and another JTA dispatch concerning the arming and instigating of Palestine Arabs by the British.
