Private Jewish educational institutions, including high schools, Hebrew schools and Yiddish schools, were closed today owing to lack of funds. The financial crisis in Latvian Jewish education was caused by the withdrawal simultaneously of subsidies by the Latvian government and the municipality of Riga.
The Jewish elementary school, maintained by the Riga municipality, was closed today and the pupils transferred to other schools. This was done because it was alleged that pupils were carrying on propaganda against compulsory religious education.
A sharp conflict broke out in Jewish circles when obligatory religious training was introduced. In the Yiddish schools pupils refused to sit in religious classes at the hours designated and carried out a two-day strike in protest.
