Funeral services for Rabbi Joseph Schneersohn, known throughout the world as the “Lubavitcher Rabbi,” were held at Montefiore cemetery today. Rabbi Sohneersohn, who was 69, died early yesterday of a coronary thrombosis.
A native of Russia, he was imprisoned after the Soviet revolution for continuing to preach religion in defiance of Communist orders. He was released in 1927 following intercession in his behalf by President Hoover. He lived in Latvia and Poland before coming to the United States in 1940.
