Mahum Moses Gaster, 80-year-old chief rabbi of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish Community of England, was eulogized tonight as “the grand old man of Jewry” at a meeting of the Anglo-Palestine Club.

In reply to expressions of tribute, the aged scholar and Zionist leader declared:

“Despite all the talk of humanity, of the unity of the world, et cetera, we still must fight for our rights, for national Judaism, for the teaching of our traditions, for the hope of the future and for the life of our intelligence, scholarship and work.”
