Brig. Moshe Dayan, former Chief of Staff of the Israel Army and now a student at the Hebrew University, criticized Israeli students for being indifferent to national problems. He said they should be taking the lead in the country’s drive toward full-scale development.
In lectures to students here and in Haifa, Brig. Dayan insisted that partisan politics and a refusal to lower the standard of living in the face of overwhelming security, immigration and development needs are placing a heavy burden on the country. He felt that the young generation, which must soon run the country, must set an example in self-sacrifice to other elements of the population. He also claimed that older party leaders are “living in the past.”
At both lectures, numerous students replied to Brig. Dayan’s remarks by explaining that their indifference was a reaction to intense party politics. They expressed themselves as disillusioned with government by party.
