Lieut. Gen. John G. Dill, commanding the greatest army to occupy Palestine since the World War, moved swiftly today to suppress the 21-week-old Arab disorders, with proclamation of martial law believed to be his immediate aim.
With contingents totalling 15,000 troops en route here or preparing to leave England to double the present garrison, Gen. Dill flew to Jerusalem from Haifa, where he had disembarked from the destroyer Douglas, and set up headquarters in the Government house here.
He plunged into conferences with local authorities, the most notable being a long discussion of the present emergency with High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, who has favored a conciliation policy with Arab leaders as against military rule by British officers.
Lieut. Col. Frederick H. Kisch, a former member of the Palestine Executive of the Jewish Agency, has been appointed the organization’s liason officer to the new British military command.
