General Kurt von Schleicher, Minister of Defense in the cabinet of Franz von Papen, was this morning appointed Chancellor of Germany, ending the political controversy which has endured for the past two weeks. Chancellor von Schleicher retains the portfolio of Minister of Defense.
Jewish leaders expect a peaceful regime with energetic measures undertaken by the new Chancellor to combat anti-Semitic incitement.
Although General von Schleicher is believed to be friendly to the National Socialists, he has not been known to utter any anti-Semitic views, or to participate in anti-Semitic acts.
On the contrary he has frequently intimated that he considers incitement against the Jews damaging to Germany and a disgrace to its reputation.
Chancellor von Schleicher has repeatedly evinced a friendly attitude to the Jewish War Veterans organization. It is recalled that at a time when all public meetings were prohibited, he permitted the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith and the Jewish War Veterans to hold a conference for the purpose of enlightening the public on the Jewish problem.
At a recent meeting of Jewish War Veterans, Colonel Ott accepted, in behalf of General von Schleicher, the memorial volume dedicated to the 12,000 Jewish soldiers who fell in the world war, declaring that General von Schleicher would cherish the volume in memory of the true and real sons of the German people.
