George S. Messersmith, American Consul General in Berlin has been named American Minister to Austria, it was announced yesterday. Messersmith will succeed George Earle of Pennsylvania, who resigned to enter polities in that State.
Three weeks ago Messersmith was appointed Minister to Urugay to succeed J. Butler Wright, who was transferred as Minister to Czechoslovakia.
The reason for the sudden shift in plans, it is understood, is the desire of the State Department to keep Messersmith in Europe owing to his familiarity with conditions there. The Austrian government has already approved the nomination of Messersmith for the post.
