Testifying before the House Special Committee to Investigate Campaign Expenditures, Gerald Z. Smith, the American First Party candidate for President, today demanded that the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League, “supported by a bunch of short-sighted Jews” and “spending thousands of dollars” to fight him with “Gestapo-like techniques” should be investigated.
“This Jewish financed organization is producing more Anti-Semitism than all the Anti-Semitism put together,” Smith said. Several weeks ago the Anti-Nazi League asked the Senate Campaign Expenditures Committee to look into the resolution offered by Homer Herman Meertz, a delegate at the American First National convention in Detroit, that all Jews should be deported or sterilized.
Smith denied that literature placing the responsibility for black-marketing on “kiloes” was part of the official literature of his convention, and also disavowed a pamphlet an a homeland for the Jews. “Whether was oppose of support a national homeland,” he said, “we’ll be called Anti-Semites.” He added that his party opposed the admission of refugees here to take the jobs of soldiers and fevered stopping immigration immediately.
