Meanwhile, however, Zahne had given utterance to such extreme views on the racial issue that wiser heads in the subsidiary societies of the German-American Conference decided against entrusting him with the political committee chairmanship.
They decided, further, it was learned, not to allow the committee to issue orders as to how to vote but to confine it to serving principally as an information bureau.
Zahne, who apparently had advance information that his hope of gaining the important chairmanship was doomed to disappointment, was in the course of making a flying trip westward today, in an effort to establish branches of the Independent Voters League as a spiked weapon of personal power.
His colleague, Dr. Schnuch, did succeed on Friday, however, in having him named to membership in the committee, a fact which will give the pair two of the body’s eight votes and will place them in a favorable position to swing vacillating or over-conservative members over to the extreme Nazi wing.
