Dr. Ranier Barzel, who was named deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union, Dr. Konrad Adenauer’s party, stressed in his acceptance speech today the need for a reconciliation of Germane with the Jewish people.
Citing West Germany’s reparations and indemnification payments to Israel and to survivors of the Nazi era, Dr. Ranier said “money is not everything — It cannot bring the dead back to life. It is more important there should be understanding between us.”
He added: “We have diplomatic relations with Israel, but our hands are held out also to the Arabs, and good relations with both are possible. ” He said that “our relations with Israel should be even better. ” Declaring that Israel was “ready to enter a new constructive phase of its relations with us, ” he said “we want the same thing. Therefore there is a good outlook for our policies in the 1970’s.”
