German companies and representatives of Holocaust survivors negotiating a multibillion dollar compensation fund for Nazi-era slave and forced laborers narrowed their differences, according to the top U.S. official mediating the talks. Stuart Eizenstat said important progress has been made on the issue of bringing legal closure to the companies, but that differences remain on such issues as who is eligible for payment and the ultimate amount of the fund. He added that he is cautiously optimistic a September deadline would be met for reaching a settlement.
