More than 10,000 Nazi war criminals have been sentenced by West German and Allied courts in West Germany since the end of World War II, a survey by the West German Ministry of Justice disclosed here today.
Of the total tried for war crimes, 818 were sentenced to death, but only 489 had been executed, the report showed. Twelve of those sentenced to death were ordered executed by West German courts, the remainder having been given death sentences by Allied courts. Only three of those sentenced to death by West German courts were executed before capital punishment was abolished in the Federal republic by a 1949 law.
West German courts tried 12,846 Nazis between May 8, 1945, the official date World War II ended, but only 5,526 were found guilty. Of those, 403 were found guilty of murder and manslaughter. A total of 5,025 Nazi war criminals were sentenced by the Allies.
