Gen. Baron Alexander von Falkenhuasen, 72-year-old Nazi military commander of occupied Belgium, and his chief aide, Gen. Eggert Reader, during the week-end were sentenced to terms of 12 years at hard labor for ordering the arbitrary arrest and deportation of Jews and other Belgians. They were also found guilty by a Belgian court martial of having ordered the execution of 240 Belgian hostages.
(In Germany, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer expressed “surprise” over the sentence by the Belgian court-martial. German Socialist leader Kurt Schumacher was similarly reported to have expressed his surprise at the sentence.)
