The first volume of a new translation of the Bible in German, undertaken by Professor Harry Torczyner of the Hebrew University at the request of the Berlin Jewish community, has appeared under the imprint of the J. Kaufman Publishing Company of Frankfurt-am-Main.
In contradiction of other German versions of the Bible, the new translation, while it adheres scrupulously to the sense of the Hebrew text and its specific character of style, endeavors as far as possible to find less difficult German forms of expression. Other translators had placed more value on retaining the form and rhythm of the original text.
The Torczyner translation also keeps to the narrative style of the Bible, and renders for those who cannot read the Holy Book in the original tongue the ideas in popular form.
The work is considered by those responsible for it as the cornerstone for the reconstruction of German Jewry. Widespread interest has been aroused in the project in every strata of German Jewish life.
