The arrest of Wilhelm Doering, 43, head of the criminal police in Siegburg, on charges of possible participation in mass execution of Jews in Russia during World War II, was announced today by Josef Dufhues, North-Rhine Westphalia Interior Minister.
Doering is the sixth police chief in the West German province against whom criminal proceedings stemming from wartime activities have been opened in recent months. The Public Workers Union, which started a campaign five years ago against former SS and the officers in the North-Rhine Westphalia police force, reported that at least 30 such police officials have been suspended and some have been arrested.
