The entire German press is featuring the award of an honorary doctorate by Oxford University to Professor Max Reinhardt, noted German-Jewish theatrical producer. The newspapers comment that this is the highest honor that the British university can bestow and all of them, with the exception of Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels’s Der Angriff, remind their readers that Professor Reinhardt holds similar degrees from Goethe University at Frankfurt (formerly the University of Frankfurt) and from the Christian Albrecht University at Kiel. Several of the papers endeavor to create the impression that Professor Reinhardt was not compelled to leave Germany because of his Jewish origin, but because of financial conditions affecting the theatres under his direction.
