Reform rabbis in Germany are not bound, in their attitude toward the Zionist movement, by any policy of the synagogue which they represent.
At a conference of Liberal Rabbis which closed here on Friday, the question of the attitude toward Zionism was heatedly debated. The debate was concluded by the adoption of a compromise resolution which stated that “the basic character of Judaism is religious.” Another part of the resolution states that “the conference, therefore, rejects the attempt to present Judaism in a national aspect.” The conference went on record as “leaving it to the personal responsibility of each individual to take whatever attitude toward Zionism he thinks proper. The conference hopes the settlement of Palestine will proceed in the spirit of safeguarding Jewish religious life.”
