German shipowners today protested to the West German Government against its announced decision not to ship reparations goods to Israel in German bottoms because of the possibility of anti-German demonstrations in Israel ports. The shipowners; who favor payment of reparations, nevertheless oppose ratification of the Bonn-Israel agreement unless it is made conditional on the employment of German shipping in the deliveries.
Meanwhile, the German trade delegation was returning home from Cairo where it broke off unsuccessful trade negotiations with Egypt which had reportedly demanded $1,000,000,000 in long-term credits as the “price” of calling off its threatened boy-cott of Germany. An Egyptian “trade delegation” which arrived in Germany last year has been ordered to return to Cairo by the Bonn authorities because in its efforts to foil the Israel reparations pact it has been in close contact with German neo-Nazi forces.
Highly placed sources close to the Bonn Government today reiterated their assurances that the reparations agreement would be ratified by the German Parliament by the end of next month, and that the provisions of the treaty would be implemented starting at that time.
