The state of Wuerttemberg-Baden, in the American zone of Germany, today paid the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization 5,000,000 Deutschemarks as a first installment of an overall settlement of Jewish claims for communal and heirless Jewish property confiscated by the Nazis in the province. The payment was made despite the fact that a formal contract embodying the settlement agreement has not yet been signed.
The Central Council of German Jews today appealed to the Bavarian authorities to eliminate “certain drawbacks” in the treatment of the case of Dr. P. Auerbach, former director of the Restitution office in Bavaria, who has been under arrest for about a year. The appeal points out that Dr. Auerbach may not be fit for trial if held imprisoned longer.
