The West German Supreme Court today upheld the war crimes conviction of Hans Walter Zech-Nenntwich, who fled to Egypt after escaping from a German jail last April.

The former SS officer was sentenced to four years for his role in wartime mass murder of Polish Jews. He returned to Germany from Egypt in August, and surrendered. He said that he came back because he was confident of acquittal.
