The communities and communal organizations of the province of North Rhine-Westphalia hive been asked by the state government to impress upon school children that “it is criminal and shameful” to desecrate Jewish cemeteries. Since a majority of these desecrations have been attributed to children, the warnings will be repeated periodically, the authorities stated.
A meeting was held in the Bavarian Parliament building here to commemorate “crystal night, ” the night of Nov. 9, 1938, which saw the first of the great pogroms against the Jews in Germany.
Speakers included artists, writers, clergymen and statesmen. They warned that a repetition of “crystal night” would mean the “total destruction of the German people. ” One speaker insisted that it is not the Jews who must change in order for anti-Semitism to be eradicated, but that the anti-Semites must be re-educated.
A former Nazi leader and one-time Gestapo general, Heinz Reinefarth, has been elected mayor of the town of Westerland, on the Isle of Sylt, it was reported here today.
