German prisoners of war returning from the Soviet Union report they encountered thousands of Jews from Transnistria and other former Rumanian territory now in Soviet hands, the anti-Communist news service Information Bureau West reports.
The Bonn-supported news service, which questioned German returnees who had been in various Soviet camps, says that the Jews are serving sentences of from 10 to 25 years. Among the work camps in which Jews are to be found, the German bureau says, are those in the Workuta region of the Artic Sea coast. It describes the Jewish prisoners as being in “particularly wretched physical condition.”
