Widespread public attention in West Germany was reported focussed today on the Government crisis in Israel provoked by disclosure of the agreement to sell $3, 000, 000 worth of Israel-made arms to the Bonn Government. The Germans were reported to be surprised by the uproar in Israel. Meanwhile, Israel’s Purchasing Mission here and Bonn officials today denied the report that Israel reparations funds from West Germany had been placed as surety for the delivery of the 250,000 weapons.
Many leading newspapers acclaimed today Prime Minister David Ben Gurion’s statement during the arms debate last week that he would welcome diplomatic relations with West Germany. Editorial opinions expressed or implied that the time had come to “normalize” relations between the two nations.
