A proposed extension of the statute of limitations for prosecution of Nazi war crimes was rejected yesterday by West German Justice Minister Ewald Bucher.
The proposal was made last week by the American Jewish Congress in letters to Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Karl Knappstein, West German Ambassador to the United States. The statute is scheduled to become effective in 1965.
The Jewish organization pointed out that earlier statutes of limitations already prevent prosecution for major war crimes other than murder. The new limitations will permanently bar prosecutions for all Nazi war crimes, the organization said.
