Germany is negotiating with Ecuador for a part in the economic exploitation of that country’s resources, it was reported here today, according to the Havas News Agency. German efforts to get a foothold in Ecuador are already far advanced, it was said German experts are in the country studying plans for modernizing the port facilities at San Lorenzo and cooperation in exploiting the rich oil fields of Santa Elena is being discussed, it was said.

According to the Berlin account, Germany has even advanced a proposal for the cession of an Ecuadorian port to the Reich. This project was not taken seriously in diplomatic circles here.

German sources insisted, however, that Ecuador has evinced a readiness to facilitate German expansion in that country. They pointed out that a Swiss firm has already been favored with a contract for a railway from Ibara to San Lorenzo.
