Germany Requests Extradition of Stangl from Brazil for Trial

The Foreign Ministry announced today that it had formally asked the Brazilian Government to extradite Franz Paul Stangl to face charges of complicity in the murder of 700, 000 Jews during the Second World War. Stangl, who was born in Austria, was arrested in Sao Paulo on March 2 on a preventive arrest order issued at the request of the Austrian Government.

A former SS man, Philip Menzinger, was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday after being convicted of the murder of eight Jews, including a child, in eastern Europe during the summer of 1943. Testimony at his trial indicated Menzinger had killed for pleasure.
