Germany is considering the institution of an annual national memorial day for victims of Nazism and genocide.
The German presidium of the Bundestag decided last week in principle to establish the day. Germany’s president and state premiers need to approve the proposal before Parliament makes it law.
The proposal suggests that the day be Jan. 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Last month, German Jewish leader Ignatz Bubis suggested Jan. 27 as an appropriate day for remembrance. He said Jan. 20, the day in 1941 when Nazi leaders at the Wannsee Conference drew up plans for the Final Solution, might also be suitable.
