Twenty Jewish women were recently arrested in the Haute Savoie region of France, bordering on Switzerland, in a round-up of Jews by the Gestapo, the Journal de Geneva reports today. The paper says that the Germans are scouring the Haute Savoie district for Jews in an attempt to prevent them fleeing to Switzerland.
The alleged reluctance of Vichy officials to carry out anti-Jewish measures is assailed by the German-controlled newspaper Depeche de Brest which quotes an “otherwise zealous French official” as stating that he obeyed anti-Jewish orders “with death in his heart.”
