Gestapo Leaders Hanged in Poland for Ordering Execution of 60,000 Jews

Gestapo leader Piotr Leideritz, convicted of responsibility for the mass execution of 60,000 Jews in Kolemeja, Galicia, was hanged ##re today following President Boleslaw Beirut’s rejection of his plea for clemency. ## was sentenced to death by a Warsaw court.

During the trial, it was established that three weeks after he had been appointed by the German occupation authorities as commandant of Kolomeja, Leideritz ordered the mass slaughter of Jews and the deportation of others to crematoriums. Under his personal supervision all children at the Kolomeja Jewish orphan asylum ?re machine gunned by a unit of Gestapo men who broke into the institution in the early hours of the morning when the children were still in their beds.
