Rabbi Emil Bernhard Cohn, Zionist leader and writer, was released yesterday by the Gestapo (secret State police) after a week’s detention. It was his second arrest in a year.
Three other Jewish leaders, Rabbi Max Nussbaum of Berlin, Franz Meyer and Benno Cohn were still under arrest. Rabbi Nussbaum was apprehended on Friday and the other two men on Thursday.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned that there is no foundation to reports current abroad that all four were arrested because they opposed the demands of Nazi authorities that performances in "Ghetto" theatres be presented in Hebrew only and that the German-Jewish press be published in Hebrew characters.
It was ascertained that such demands were never made on any Jewish institutions nor on the German Zionist Federation. Furthermore, it is known that the Zionist organization has no direct influence on the Jewish Culture Society, which operates the "Ghetto" playhouses, nor over a majority of the Jewish publications.
Informed circles here expect that the three Jewish leaders will be released tomorrow because under legal procedure the Gestapo is forbidden to detain anyone more than eight days without preferring charges. After that time, prisoners must either be released or sent to a concentration camp pending trial.
