Declaring that he was undoubtedly the last British High Commissioner for Palestine, Sir Alan G. Cunningham today told residents of an Arab village in the Samaria district that Britain wishes to depart from the country ##fully, leaving behind a basis for future development.In another village he visited during a tour of the district, the High Commissioner said that it was for the people of Palestine to decide the conditions under which ## British withdrawal would be effected. He again reiterated that the British wanted to leave behind peace and security when they withdraw.
The Arab press reports that a delegation from the Palestine Arab Higher Committee’s office in Beirut is expected here today to begin organizing Arab committees to “defend Palestine.”
A large truck containing textiles valued at nearly $50,000 was today hijacked ## Petach Tikvah. The truck was in a motor convoy bound from Haifa to Tel Aviv which was halted briefly by several mon disguised as British traffic policemen. While the other vehicles were permitted to proceed, its driver was waved to the side of the ##. Later the truck was found abandoned and looted, but there was no sign of the ##river. It is believed that the “policemen” were members of an extremist organization.Two members of the Haganah were arrested tonight in Tel Aviv while posting leaf?. A Sternist killed last night in a gun duel with a constable outside of a police station in northern Tel Aviv was today identified as Shlomo Nachshon, 18.
