Another stormy debate on the question of the persecution of Jews in Germany took place in Parliament. Actually, it was no debate. In a debate there is a division of opinions. In this instance, however, there was unanimity. All the speakers, from the representatives of the labor party to the conservative leaders and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Austin Chamberlain, strongly condemned the murderous policies of the Hitler government and nailed to the pillory the “newly awakened Germany”….

But while London storms with protest against the Nazi atrocities, Washington is still hushing us with the assurance that the situation of the German Jews will soon be improved. Neither our liberal president nor, even, one of his ministers has found it necessary publicly to condemn the Hitler murders. On the contrary, the Washington Department of State has even made several attempts to persuade the Jewish leaders to stop the public movement of protest against Germany. We were assured that the Washington government was working quietly to make the present leaders of Germany reject their anti-Semitic policies, and that public protests would merely have the opposite effect. . . .

The American government dare not sit idly by any longer and watch the wild barbarians and sadists kill off a whole nation. America must follow the example set by England and must make her voice of protest against the Nazi brutalities ring out strong and clear.

The million of American Jews feel deeply the agony of the Jewish tragedy in Germany. And it is simply insulting them grossly when the Washington government, instead of openly showing its indignation against the blood persecutors and its sympathy towards the persecuted, merely intensifies the hurt by assurances that the lot of the German Jews will apparently change soon for the better.

PRAISE FOR WEIZMANN

Dr. Chaim Weizmann is the greatest and most able leader which the present Jewish generation possesses. He is the only one who should be at the helm of the Jewish ship in these calamitous times our nation is experiencing. He is the one who should lead the unfortunate Jews out of Germany and into Palestine. And just as no one had to send for Moses to lead the Jews {SPAN}ou#{/SPAN} of Egypt, for he came of his own accord, so is there no need to draft Weizmann, for he will come of his own accord. The historic moment will bring him, the right leader, to the right place.
