More than 20,000 Jews–the largest Jewish audience since the visit of former Prime Minister Moshe Sharett in 1953– assembled in Luna Park here to listen to an address by Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, who is now visiting Argentina.
Mrs. Meir expressed her thanks to the Argentine Government for the “extraordinary hospitality” extended her since her arrival, terming this a sign of friendship and cooperation between the two Governments. She spoke of the great worries as well as the great achievements of Israel’s first decade. She stressed the Jewish people’s resilience under the tragic events of the pre-State period.
Terming free immigration “the fundamental fact of our independence, ” Mrs. Meir described the agricultural, industrial and other advances in Israel, the valor of Israel’s soldiers and the friendship and cooperation between Israel and the many nations of Africa and Asia. She appealed to the Jewish people to support faithfully the young Jewish State. Ambassador Aryeh Levavi who also addressed the meeting, stressed the excellent relations between Israel and Argentina and the warm feelings of Argentine Jewry toward Israel.
