Israel wants friendly relations with the Soviet Union but will not pay “the price” of shunting aside its interest in the ending of Soviet persecutions against Russian Jewry, Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, told the Knesset (Parliament) here today.
The subject arose in the house on a motion that the Knesset support a protest against Soviet anti-Semitism voiced by a local organization. Proposing that the motion be referred to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Mrs. Meir added: “As much as we desire friendly relations with all countries, it would be folly to think Israel would ever agree to buy such friendship at the expense of the welfare of any Jewish community.” With only the Communist faction voting in opposition, the Knesset accepted Mrs. Meir’s proposal to refer the motion to committee.
