Foreign Minister Golda Meir today handed identical notes to the ambassadors of the six member countries of the European Economic Community expressing Israel’s strong objection to the decision by the EEC Commission to apply “reference prices” for Israeli oranges exported to the Common Market countries, Mrs. Meir explained to the envoys the effect of the move on Israel’s citrus exports which would be at a competitive disadvantage.
The notes were presented to the envoys of France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg. Mrs. Meir stressed the need for action to reverse the decision before the December 10 deadline when it is scheduled to go into effect. Haim Zadok, Israel’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Amiel Najar, Israeli Ambassador to the European Economic Community, are currently visiting Common Market capitals in efforts to secure a reversal of the decision.
