Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, will head Israel’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, this year, and will go to the United States for this purpose about a week before the Assembly’s September 15 opening, it was announced here today.
Mrs. Meir, it was indicated, feels that, since former Israel delegation chairman Abba Eban will be absent from the UN this year, she should attend the Assembly at least during the first few weeks of “general debate,” when delegation heads spell out the major foreign policies of their governments.
After the “general debate,” Mrs. Meir plans on returning home to participate in the election campaign. Later, she may go back to the United Nations once more, to participate in the expected debate on the Arab refugee problem.
Sharing the delegation work with Mrs. Meir this year will be Israel’s acting permanent representative at the United Nations, Yosef Tekoab; Michael S. Comay, former Ambassador to Canada, now assistant director-general of the Foreign Ministry; Arthur Lourie, Israel’s present Ambassador to Ottawa; and several other Foreign Ministry experts.
While in the United States, Mrs. Meir will also deliver several major addresses before Jewish organizations. She will speak before the National Economic Conference being convened by the State of Israel Bond Organization in Chicago, Sept. 18-20; and will address the national convention of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, at St. Louis.
