The recipients of the Stephen Wise Awards for 1956 will be Mrs.Golda Meir, Foreign Minister of Israel; former Federal Judge J, Waties Waring; the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning of Philadelphia; and ORT, the Organization for Rehabilitation Through Training, it was announced here today by Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress.
The awards, each bearing a cash value of $1,000, are presented annually for outstanding service in the four major areas to which the late Dr. Stephen Wise, a founder of the American Jewish Congress, devoted his life. The four areas are: the growth and development of Israel: the extension of civil rights and civil liberties; the promotion of Jewish culture and scholarship; and the welfare of the Jewish people. The recipients of the 1956 Awards were selected by a committee of leading citizens, Jewish and non-Jewish, headed by Louis M. Rabinowitz, industrialist and philanthropist of New York City,
