Arthur J. Goldberg, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, was unanimously elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Harry S Truman Center for the Advancement of Peace at the inaugural meeting of the board here.
Prof. Julius Stone of the law faculty of Sydney University in Australia, the center’s academic director, said the center, which is being built adjacent to the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus, would be in full operation by 1970. Avraham Harman, Hebrew University president, announced that the Israeli Government had set up an endowment fund from which the center would receive each year in perpetuity $100,000 for research projects, including creation of a documentation center.
Justice Goldberg declared yesterday that Israel had a right to insist on terms for a “durable and lasting peace” and “not be satisfied with temporary arrangements.” He also said that Israel had the right to the support of the United States and the entire world in her quest for peace. He left Israel after a five-day visit during which he met with Israeli leaders.
