Leaders of American Jewry as well as of other Jewish communities throughout the world are beginning to realize that the time has come to show much keener interest in the advancement of higher studies in Israel and to place the Hebrew University on stable financial foundations, Dr. Nahum Goldmann declared here yesterday, addressing the ceremony at which ground was broken for the Hebrew University’s new campus.
Jews all over the world, Dr. Goldmann said, have become increasingly aware that the destiny of Israel is bound up primarily with the quality of its cultural creations and with the impression that its cultural stature will make upon world Jewry and upon the world in general.
Israel’s strength, Dr. Goldmann continued, will not lie in quantity and size but in quality. This is especially true now when gigantic powers determine the fate of the world and of the era. Jewish leaders throughout the world are, therefore, aware of the need to make an all-out effort to solve the problem of higher education in Israel as a prerequisite for the state’s cultural future which will undoubtedly be very different from that of other small states in the Middle East and other regions, the Jewish Agency chairman stated.
