Dr. Nahum Goldman is about to launch negotiations here with Swiss authorities regarding the ultimate release by Swiss banks and other financial institutions of vast sums of money, running into hundreds of millions of dollars, belonging to Jewish victims of Nazism who disappeared in the holocaust after depositing their monies here.
A bill that will make possible the identification of such deposits, now pending in the Swiss Parliament, will soon be adopted to the satisfaction of all parties concerned, Dr. Goldmann predicted here today. Under Swiss law, banks need not reveal the names of accounts deposited under secret code. The new bill would make such identification possible, so that it could be determined who the original depositors were before their annihilation by the Nazis.
The Swiss Government has proposed a bill in Parliament, calling for compensation to relatives of the dead depositors or to other Jewish victims of Nazism from the funds to be unfrozen as a result of the identification of the coded accounts. Swiss banks and other financial institutions have submitted amendments to the measure pending in Parliament.
