Protesting against the U.S. State Department’s announcement that punitive measures will be taken against American volunteers serving with Jewish forces in Palestine, Dr. Israel Goldstein, acting chairman of the American Zionist Emergency Council, has wired President Truman and Secretary of State Marshall that the action of the Sytate Department is “contrary to the bet American traditions.
“As recently as n 1939-40 numbers of American citizens, with the moral encouragement of the American people, volunteered to serve in the defense of England and France against Axis attack at a time when America was neutral. Surely the same attitude ought to prevail in the present case of Palestine,” Dr. Goldstein urged. The Zionist leader pointed out that “Jewish forces are defending United Nations policy while neither the United Nations nor the United Sates has as yet taken any steps to curb the brazen Arab aggression” against Palestine.
Dr. Goldstein has been re-elected national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal for a second year, it was announced today. As U.P.A. chairman, Dr. Goldstein becomes once again one of the three national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. Mark Sugarman was re-elected chairman of the U.P.A. board of directors.
